HOT Construction Issues

Tree Clearing

Trees In response to public input, the project was scaled back in 2002 to reduce impacts on homes, businesses and environment. However, the project must clear trees to make room to for four new lanes.

Clearing will be minimized where possible, but surrounding residents can expect trees to be cleared if they are in an area approximately 50 feet on each side of the Beltway.

Soundwall Construction

Soundwall The Capital Beltway HOT Lanes project will construct approximately 70,000 linear feet of soundwalls to improve protections for surrounding communities.

Many existing soundwalls will be replaced and upgraded as part of the project. Residents living near existing soundwalls need to be aware that soundwalls in their area may be removed for a period of time while new retaining walls and new, upgraded soundwalls are constructed.

Decisions on the location and characteristics of soundwalls constructed as part of the project are in accordance with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Noise Abatement Policy.
